Pendant design: bails, loops and chain fit

By Ronak Rawal · 1 October 2026 · 2 min read

A pendant is only as good as the way it hangs. The bail, the loop at the top, connects the pendant to the chain, and it needs careful sizing.

Choose the bail

  • Fixed bail: a simple loop soldered to the pendant.
  • Hidden or concealed bail: sits behind the pendant for a cleaner look.
  • Hinged or pinch bail: opens so the chain can be changed easily.

Size the opening

The opening must fit the chain, the clasp and any end fittings. If the chain is thick, the bail must be larger. Ask which chain the client will use, or design the pendant to suit a standard thickness.

Balance and orientation

The pendant should hang the right way up. Place the bail at the top centre of the weight, so the piece does not tilt or twist.

Strength

The bail takes the whole weight of the pendant, so it needs enough thickness. Check the thin points in the model before casting. See the casting checklist.

Rendering

A pendant looks best on a chain or on a neck. See on-body images.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change the chain later?

Yes, if the bail's opening is large enough. A pinch or hinged bail makes this easier.

Should the chain be part of the model?

Often the chain is bought separately. If you want it in the render, tell the designer the style and length.
