Earring design in CAD: studs, drops and hoops
Earrings look simple, but they come with some practical needs: they must be light, balanced, comfortable and made as a perfect pair.
Studs
A stud has a decorative top and a post that goes through the ear. The post and back must be strong and the right length. Common post thicknesses are around 0.8 to 1.0 mm, but check with your supplier. Backs can be friction, screw or locking types.
Drop and dangle earrings
The design hangs below the ear, so balance matters. The connection must be strong and allow movement. Weight should be kept reasonable for comfort.
Hoops
A hoop needs a hinge and a clasp that are secure and easy to use. The cross-section of the hoop affects comfort and weight.
Why CAD helps
- The left and right are mirrored exactly, so the pair matches.
- Weight can be checked from the model before casting.
- Stone seats can be identical for both earrings.
Rendering earrings
Show a front view, a side view and the back, so buyers see how the earring is worn and fastened. See the render angles guide and our rates.
Frequently asked questions
Should earrings be modelled in pairs?
The model is usually built once and mirrored, so both earrings are identical.
How heavy can an earring be?
It depends on the wearer, but heavy pieces strain the ear. Aim for balance and ask for the weight from the model.
