Necklace design in CAD: lengths, links and balance
A necklace rests on the neck and collarbone, so the length, weight and balance all affect how it looks and feels.
Standard lengths
| Name | Typical length |
|---|---|
| Choker | about 14 to 16 inches |
| Princess | about 17 to 19 inches |
| Matinee | about 20 to 24 inches |
| Opera | about 28 to 36 inches |
Links and structure
If the necklace has several parts, each connection must be strong and flexible. A piece with a centre feature, such as a pendant or a row of stones, needs the chain on each side to match.
Balance
A heavier centre pulls the necklace forward. A well-balanced design hangs evenly and sits flat. CAD lets you adjust the weight distribution before casting.
Clasp and strength
The clasp must be easy to use and strong enough for the weight. A safety catch is advisable for expensive pieces.
Complexity and price
Necklaces have many parts, so they take more modelling time. Our published rates reflect this. For a rendered view on a neck, see on-body images.
Frequently asked questions
How do I choose a necklace length?
Think about the neckline it will be worn with. Princess length is the most common, but measure against a necklace the client already likes.
Can a necklace be made adjustable?
Yes. A chain extender or an adjustable sliding link can be built in.
