Eternity band design tips: full vs half, and stone size
An eternity band has stones set around the ring. It looks simple, but it has some design decisions that affect cost, comfort and resizing.
Full vs half eternity
- Full eternity: stones go all the way round. It looks complete, but it is hard to resize.
- Half or three-quarter: stones cover the top part only. It is more comfortable to wear and easier to resize.
Stone count and size depend on ring size
The number of stones that fit around a band changes with the ring size. A larger size needs more stones or bigger ones. Decide the size before you finalise the stone layout, or the pattern may not close evenly. See the ring size chart.
Setting style
Common choices are shared-prong, channel and pavé. Compare them here.
What to check in CAD
- Even spacing, with no gap at the join
- Enough metal between stones
- Smooth inside surface for comfort
- Enough band thickness under the stones
Our sample renders show a round-stone band from several angles, and the eternity band is a good piece to render in all three gold colours.
Frequently asked questions
Can a full eternity band be resized?
It is difficult, since the stones go all the way around. Many jewellers advise getting the size right first.
Why do some bands use shared prongs?
Shared prongs hold two neighbouring stones, so the metal between stones is minimal and the stones look continuous.
