Pavé vs micro-pavé vs channel setting explained
Small stones are set in rows to add sparkle. These three settings are used most, and each has a different look and a different amount of work.
Pavé
Stones are set close together, held by tiny beads of metal, so the surface looks paved with diamonds. It gives a lot of sparkle, but the beads can wear over time.
Micro-pavé
The same idea with smaller stones and finer beads, usually set under magnification. The effect is more delicate, but it needs very precise modelling and finishing.
Channel setting
Stones sit in a groove between two metal walls, with no prongs. It is smooth and protects the stones well, which suits rings worn daily.
Comparison
| Setting | Look | Protection | Work involved |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pavé | Sparkling surface | Medium | Medium to high |
| Micro-pavé | Fine, delicate | Medium | High |
| Channel | Smooth, clean | High | Medium |
In CAD
Each stone needs a seat and enough metal around it. For rendering, remember that fine details such as beads must be built into the CAD, because a render shows only what the model contains. See the casting checklist.
Frequently asked questions
Is pavé more expensive than channel?
It often is, because it needs more modelling and setting work, but costs depend on the design.
Do pavé stones fall out?
They can if the beads wear down, so periodic checks by a jeweller are recommended.
