Accent stones and side stone layout in jewellery CAD

By Ronak Rawal · 1 October 2026 · 2 min read

Accent or side stones frame the main stone and add sparkle. A good layout looks balanced and effortless, but it takes careful planning in CAD.

Decide the pattern first

  • Graduated: stones get smaller along the band, away from the centre.
  • Uniform: all stones are the same size.
  • Cluster or halo: stones surround the centre stone.

Get the spacing right

Stones need a small, even amount of metal between them. If the gaps vary, the row looks uneven. CAD makes it easy to space stones precisely along a curve.

Plan symmetry

Both sides of the ring should match. This is one place where CAD beats hand-making, since the left and right are mirrored exactly.

Think about the setting

Choose between pavé, channel and prong settings for the side stones. Each needs different metal thickness around the stones.

Sizes and counts

Tell your designer the stone sizes in millimetres, and the number of stones per side. If the ring size matters, see the eternity band guide.

Frequently asked questions

How many side stones should a ring have?

There is no rule. It depends on the design, the band width and your budget.

Do side stones make the ring harder to resize?

They can, especially if the stones run far down the band.
