How to protect your jewellery designs when sharing files
To get a piece made, you must share your design with other people. These habits reduce the risk of the design being copied or misused.
Share the right file for the job
- Share .stl files for printing, since they are harder to edit.
- Keep the editable .3dm file private, unless the person needs to change it.
- Share renders with watermarks when showing designs to buyers.
Use agreements
Ask partners to agree in writing that they will keep files confidential, and not use them for others. A short written agreement is better than a verbal one.
Limit who gets what
Share only what each person needs. A caster does not need your renders, and a photographer does not need your CAD file.
Keep records
Keep dated copies of your sketches, files and renders. They show when you created the design, which can help if there is ever a dispute.
Choose partners carefully
Work with studios that treat your designs as yours. We keep your files confidential and never publish or share a design without your permission. See also how to choose a rendering studio.

Can I register a jewellery design?
