Lab-grown vs natural diamond: does it change the CAD model?
Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds, with the same physical and chemical makeup as natural ones. For a CAD model, there is no difference in how they are set. A round brilliant of a given size gets the same seat and prongs either way.
What stays the same
- Seat shape, depth and angle, which depend on size and shape
- Prongs, bezel and settings
- Rendering, since both look similar in an image
What can change
- Stone size: a given budget often buys a larger stone, so the setting may be bigger.
- Stone tolerances: confirm exact measurements, as for any stone.
- Documentation and labelling: not a CAD issue, but listings and certificates should be accurate.
Designing for either
Give the designer the exact size of the stone you have, or plan to buy. If the ring may later hold a different stone, say so, so the design can allow for it. See carat weight vs millimetre size.
Whichever you choose, a casting-ready model is what protects the stone.
Frequently asked questions
Do lab-grown diamonds need different prongs?
No. The prongs depend on the stone's shape and size, not on how it was formed.
Will renders look different for lab-grown stones?
No. A render shows a diamond in either case.
