Hallmark and engraving space in jewellery CAD
Most pieces need a place for a hallmark and the maker's mark, and many customers want engraving. If the model has no space, the marks may be cramped, unreadable or impossible to stamp.
Why plan it in the model
- Hallmarking and stamping need a flat, thick-enough area.
- A curved or thin surface can distort or damage the mark.
- Engraving needs enough metal so the text is not too deep.
Where to put marks
For rings, the inside of the shank is the usual place. Make sure the area is smooth and flat enough, with some thickness. Avoid placing marks near stones or a join.
Legal requirements
Many countries require marks for precious metals. For example, hallmarking of gold jewellery is required in India. Check the rules where you sell, and plan the space to suit them.
Engraving
Tell your designer if you want engraving, and what the text will be. Engraved text needs a surface with enough area and depth. Some designs include text in the CAD itself.
Check before casting
Ask your caster and hallmarking centre about their requirements, then include them in the model. See the casting checklist.
Frequently asked questions

Usually inside the shank on a smooth, flat area. Confirm with your hallmarking centre.
Can engraving be added after casting?
Yes, but the metal must be thick enough. Planning it in the model is safer.
