Final model check before printing: a practical list
Once a model is printed and cast, mistakes cost real money. A short final check before printing catches most problems.
The list
- Scale and units. Confirm the model is in millimetres, and measure a known part, such as the inside diameter.
- Closed solid. The model must be watertight, with no gaps or open edges.
- Thin areas. Check the thinnest walls, prongs and shank against your caster's minimums.
- Stone seats. Compare each seat to the exact stone size. See stone seats.
- Prong and setting access. Make sure the setter can reach and close the prongs.
- Finger size and comfort. Check the inner diameter and the inside shape.
- Marks and engraving. Confirm space is left. See hallmark space.
- Weight. Check the volume and estimated weight against the plan.
- File format. Export the correct format, such as .stl, at a smooth setting. See file formats.
Test first
For a new design, print a single test and check the fit. It is cheaper than a full batch.
We build models with these checks in mind. See our services.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I check models?
Every time, especially after changes. Even a small edit can create a thin area or a gap.
Can software check the model for me?
Some tools highlight problems such as open edges or thin walls, but a human check is still important.
