KeyShot vs AI renders for jewellery: when to use each
Jewellery images now come from two very different routes: classic rendering in software such as KeyShot, and AI image generation. They look similar on a screen, but they are not interchangeable. Using the wrong one can mislead a buyer or cost you a sale.
What a KeyShot render is
KeyShot renders the actual 3D CAD model, with real materials for the metal and the stones. Every prong, stone and shoulder in the image is a part of the model that will be cast. Because of that, a KeyShot image is an accurate preview of the finished piece.
- Good for catalogues, line sheets and online listings
- Good for client approval before casting
- Easy to repeat in different metals and from several angles
What an AI render is
An AI render is an image generated by an AI model, guided by your CAD model, a render or a sketch. It is fast and can create styles of picture that are expensive to make by hand, such as lifestyle scenes or a ring on a hand. The trade-off is that the AI may invent or change details, such as the number of stones, the shape of a prong or the shine of a setting.
- Good for concept visuals and mood boards
- Good for social media and lifestyle images
- Good for early previews when a design is not final

A simple rule
If the image has to show exactly what you will make and sell, use KeyShot. If the image is there to inspire, attract attention or explore an idea, AI can do it faster and cheaper. Never use an AI image as the reference for manufacturing.
Using both together
Many jewellers use both: KeyShot renders for the product page, and AI images for social media and on-body scenes. We offer KeyShot renders, AI renders and on-body images, each with its own published rate, and you can see samples of both.
