How to design an engagement ring in CAD: a practical guide
An engagement ring is usually built around one main stone, so the design starts there. The rest of the ring, such as the setting, the shank and any details, is shaped to show the stone and keep it secure.
1. Start with the stone
Fix the shape and size in millimetres, because every other part depends on it. Round, oval and marquise stones need different settings. See how stone shapes change the model.
2. Choose the setting
Options include prong, bezel and halo settings. A hidden halo adds sparkle under the stone without changing the top view.
3. Shape the shank
The band connects the stone to the finger. Shank styles such as cathedral or split change both the look and the strength.
4. Add the details
Side stones, engraving, milgrain or a decorative gallery can be added. Keep a balance, since every extra detail adds time and cost.
5. Think about wear
Allow for the ring to sit comfortably, to clear a wedding band, and to keep the stone protected from knocks.
6. Render and check
Review a render, then check the model for casting. Our rates are published, and we can build and render the ring for you.
Frequently asked questions
What information do I need to start?
The stone shape and size, the metal, the ring size and a reference picture. See our design brief template.
Can the stone be changed later?
Yes, but the setting must be rebuilt around the new size, so it is best to decide early.
