What is jewellery CAD? A simple guide for jewellers and designers
Jewellery CAD (computer-aided design) means building a piece of jewellery as an exact 3D model on a computer before anything is cast in metal. If you have ever seen a ring in a catalogue that looks perfect from every angle, there is a good chance it started life as a CAD file.
Why jewellers use CAD
- Accuracy. Every dimension is set in millimetres, from the width of the band to the seat that holds each stone.
- Cheap revisions. Changing a prong, a shoulder or a band thickness on screen costs far less than remaking a wax or a casting.
- Repeatability. The same file can be produced again later, or resized, without starting from scratch.
- Visualisation. A finished model can be rendered into realistic images, so buyers can approve a design before it exists.
- One shared file. Designer, manufacturer and retailer all work from the same model instead of from loose sketches.
How jewellery CAD works, step by step
- Brief. You share a sketch, a photo or a reference, with the metal, stone sizes and ring size.
- 3D model. The designer builds the piece in jewellery CAD software, usually Rhino 3D and Matrix.
- Render and review. The model is rendered so you can check proportions, stone placement and finish.
- Revisions. Changes are made until the design is approved.
- Production file. The final model is exported as a file your caster or 3D printer can use, such as .3dm or .stl.
- Casting and finishing. A wax or resin print is cast in metal, then polished and set by hand.
What a good jewellery CAD model includes
A model that only looks good on screen is not enough. A casting-ready model has:
- stone seats sized to the actual stone, with the right depth and angle
- prongs and settings strong enough to hold the stones safely
- sensible wall thickness, so the piece casts cleanly and wears well
- the correct inside diameter for the finger size
- a clean, closed solid in a standard file format
CAD does not replace the bench
CAD designs and prepares the piece. Casting, polishing, setting the stones and final finishing are still done by skilled hands. The two work together: CAD removes guesswork, and the bench turns the file into jewellery.
Who needs jewellery CAD?
- Manufacturers use it to get production-ready files and reduce rework.
- Retailers use it to add new designs to their range without a full design team.
- Designers use it to turn sketches into models they can show clients and have made.

Frequently asked questions
Is jewellery CAD only for rings?
No. It is used for rings, pendants, earrings, bracelets and necklaces, from simple bands to complex multi-stone pieces.
Can I get a CAD model from a hand sketch?
Yes. A clear sketch with sizes and stone details is enough for a designer to start. Photos of similar pieces help.
What files do I get from a CAD designer?
Usually a .3dm file for editing and an .stl file for 3D printing, plus renders if you ordered them.
